I note as one enters this 'emporium' that there are two busts of (presumably) the two founders. I cannot find any names on them - Can I assume Mah Boon Krong is a merger of their names?

You are refering to Mr Ma Boonkul and Ms Boonkrong Boonkul. This patriarch couple have set up the wealth of the Boonkul Family. The Boonkul family has rice mill for export business as well as topiaca export business whigo pretty well ... and their children have diversify to cashew nut business as well as the business building such as Chok Chao Building (UOB Rattanasin HQ) and Mabonkrong Center.

However, the Boonkul went burst due to 1997 economic meltdown thus those buildings have been trasferrred to other people.
