Notice that PointAsia is promising some kind of free service to the general public. I'd be glad if those who are more familiar with Thai could explore this site for us and report back. If I relied on my Thai, I would certainly find some interesting stuff, but it might take days. (The following link may expire shortly): -

Point Asia to debut new digital map

Digital mapping specialist PointAsia will next month launch its WebMap, a digital map with applications and tools for corporations and organisations to run on their own web sites. The map will also be available to the public free of charge. According to Vivatvong Vichit-vadakan, executive vice president of Point Asia Dot Com (Thailand), the web map has a better quality of image and location database than Google Earth, and he also claimed it covered more of the country, with 80 percent coverage and public information details such as transportation systems and administration areas.

Users will be able to login to PointAsia's web map anywhere in the world because the data is stored at the company's server. They will be able to share points of interest (POI) or create a group of friends to share POIs with.

For commercial purposes customers will have to pay a yearly subscription. ''It's very cheap compared to the information customers get,'' Vivatvong said.

One of the significant features is that users can view all of the locations in the three Southern provinces, Vivatvong said, and he claimed that not even government agencies have collected some of the mapping data.

PointAsia.com has around 100,000 members and the company expects that this will increase to 200,000 this year. It has been doing joint development with SISEA, which does satellite imaging.

''We did not invest a high cost in the space imaging, but we spent a lot on hardware and to develop the program,'' the president said, stating that in the initial stages it would focus on encouraging the public to utilise the digital map.

The company expects to generate revenue by the end of this year through advertising and fees from corporate users.

A number of companies, including Siam Cement Group, have already started using the PointAsia.com map.

Later this year, PointAsia will work with a partner to upload around 180 new property projects on the web for the Home Buyers' Guide 2007, which will be held March 16-18.

Apart from the details of each housing project, there will be information such as city planning, regulations, land use, and land price evaluation.

The company also works with partner web site jergun.com, a meeting place where members from around the world can record addresses of their friends.

Meanwhile, in collaboration with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, it will organise a content creation contest for the Point Asia map.
