80 year-old Thai man charged with human trafficking in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH - An 80-year-old Thai man has been charged with human trafficking in Cambodia after police arrested him trying to take five young Cambodian women back to Thailand, officials said Thursday.

The suspect, Sathean Dy Em, and the women aged between 14 and 23 years, were detained Sunday as they tried to cross the border in northwest Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, police told AFP.

He was going to put the women to work in his guesthouse, provincial court prosecutor Nhoung Thul was quoted in the English-language Cambodia Daily as saying.

The suspect confessed that he had taken three of the women to work in Thailand before, "but the local police sent them back," deputy provincial police chief Cheang Son said.

Phnom Penh - Cambodia's leading pop heartthrob has backed down on threats of legal action against a farmer who named a stud bull after him, the singer said Friday.

The nation's most popular singer-actor, Preap Sovath, 36, had threatened legal action against the owner of a 10,000-dollar Brahman breeding bull he named after the sex symbol.

Sovath was quoted in a range of local media to be taking action to protect his wife, who had reportedly become distressed after seeing advertisements offering the services of the bovine Preap Sovath for 100 dollars per mating, with satisfaction guaranteed.

Phnom Penh - A Cambodian man who could not decide between his current and ex-girlfriend 'regretfully' married them both at once, local media reported Monday.

Khmer-language Koh Santepheap daily featured a front-page picture of the dual ceremony with Bou Samanak, 28, flanked by beautiful brides Ly Nary, 21, and Choy Chanthu, 20 at Sunday's wedding.

'This is my unfortunate destiny,' the paper quoted Samanak as saying. 'Although I am happy to take both, my life now will be one of a lot of hard work to keep them happy.'

Although the marriage technically flouts Cambodia's bigamy law, police require a complaint to take action, and both women reportedly agreed they would not file one.

No family members of either bride attended, the paper said.
