In the old cemetary by the Maenam Riverside hotel there is a large monument dedicated to deceased members of the Concordia Club. I was only able to view two sides of the monument due to flooding, but most of the members listed died in the early 1870s in Hong Kong, Bangkok, or 'At Sea'. The top of the tombstone has a pillar that looks like it was broken at some point and may once have supported something else. Does anyone know what the club was, and why the Bangkok branch put up such a big monument? I hope it was a large club, otherwise it was a pretty deadly one to belong to.
BTW, if you are interested in Thai history and have not been there you should do so. You will find the graves and headstones for Berli, Jucker, Bradley, McFarland, and a host of other famous names of foreigners intimately involved in Thailand years ago. Not a good time to visit at the moment because of the flooding as you are restricted to the main path, but at other times of the year you can walk around the entire cemetary. Other than the flooding the place is in much better shape than it was years ago. I certainly hope authorities don't remove it like they did the one on Silom not long ago, or like the ones removed in Rangoon...
