Well, they don't have to be thrown. If you scroll down a tad on the www.elidefire.co.th site there is a repeating video of a fire burning under a ball mounted on a special wall bracket. The ball suddenly explodes and woofs out the fire pronto. So as it says below, it can be placed in areas where there are possible fire risks. Unfortunately, most of us are still unable to see the fairly convincing Youtube videos in the previous post:

Elide Fire Presentation of their exclusive Fire Extinguishing Ball

At the Eastern Grand Palace in Soi Kow Tha Low a press conference was held to announce the International Certification for a new product which is available here in Thailand. The product is called Elide Fire and is a Fire Extinguishing Ball which, as the name suggests, is a circular object which can be thrown onto fires and will extinguish the fire without any further human intervention. The product which was demonstrated in the car park of the Hotel has been awarded the ISO 9001-2000 Certification from the International Organization for Standardization. The product is exclusively distributed here in Thailand by the Siam Safety Empire Co Ltd located in Banglamung. The balls are priced at 1,800 Baht each and can be placed near electrical equipment including fuse boards and will extinguish any fires in approximately 10 seconds. Award for on the ball inventor:mad:

APINYA WIPATAYOTIN

A fire extinguishing ball invented by a Thai won the bronze medal at the 21st World Genius Convention in Japan earlier this month. Created by Phanawatnan Kaimart, the ball is easy to use and can effectively and easily douse a fire. What users need to do is throw the ball into the flame.

He is the first Thai inventor to win the prestigious award.

The ball contains 1.2 kilogrammes of mono ammonium phosphate, it is not flammable and once it is thrown into the fire, it releases the chemical to put out the flames.

The ball can douse a fire with a 1.3-metre radius within three minutes.

Mr Phanawatnan, the patent owner of the Elide Fire Extinguishing Ball, said that most Thai inventors were keen on inventing and developing new products, but a critical problem was that they could not make money from them.

''Many interesting inventions have been kept on the shelf after winning many awards,'' he said, adding that this was partly because of a lack of support from government agencies in producing the inventions on a commercial scale.

''I have spent 25 million baht to develop the fire extinguishing ball. Now, I can clear all my debt and earn over 100 million baht a year from selling the patented fire extinguishing balls in 30 countries,'' he said.

Mr Phanawatnan got the inspiration to invent the fire extinguishing tool when he saw coverage of a disastrous fire at the Royal Jomtien Resort Hotel, which claimed 91 lives in 1997. He saw people crying for help and many died because it took a long time for fire fighters and rescue teams to reach them.

The tragedy gave him the idea that there should be an easy-to-use device that an individual could use to extinguish a fire on their own.

He spent almost two years creating the fire extinguishing ball and has patented his invention in Thailand, the US, Switzerland and China.

It is not the first time Mr Phanawatnan's fire extinguishing ball has earned international recognition.

The ball previously won the gold medal with mention award at the Brussels Eureka 2001, New Millennium Award 2003 in Germany and the International Quality Crown Award 2004 in London.
