View Full Version : Train Speeds in Thailand
Here's another freak question... :D
Today I wondered what is the highest speed a train ever attained on Thai railway tracks?
And also, what are the typical maximum speeds of trains in SRT's regular service?
Again, I am pretty sure K. Wisarut has an answer to this....

120 km/hr for Intercity DMU (Daewoo Type) .. even though Daewoo DMU usually set the maximum speed to 105 km/hr ...
100 km/hr is for British Sprinter DMU ... now No. 2506 is GONE ... due to the collsion wiht the truck alogn with GEK 4049 whcih got burnt into charcoal .... after the accident in Chonburi.
Typically (those Express run by HID, GEA and Alstom locos) the the maximum speed to 90 km/hr ... The maximum cargo speed is 70 km/hr ... Well, just try imaging that there are 30 cargo cars pull by GEA runnign at 100 km/hr ....

Surely the max speed has a lot to do with the permanant way. Looking at the trackwork at BangSue for example it varies from flat bottom very short rail lengths simply held in place by 2 spikes(one each side of the rail), to ral laid on a plate which can then accept 2 or 3 spikes each side, to rail fastened with some kind of clip. Pointwork is the same ranging from simple spikes to plates and 4 botls.
I notice upgrading to concrete sleepers going on along the line to Hua Hin. What will be the maximum speed on this section when that work is complete?

Khun PeterPimwong,
Yeah, I GOT the news form Thai railwauy wokrkers that the KTM Loco Class 24 Borrowed from KTM was DERAILED at Bangsue Loco Yard and it had CHOPPED the old rusting steel rails as well as the rotten wooden slewepers into pieces :D The good old rail dated from WWII .... while Spikes and fit plates are loosened up ... due to heavy uses and abuses fo the tracks ...
For the rehab track from Bangsue - Talingchan - Nakhon Pathom - Hua Hin, it is supposed to allow the maximum speed of 120 kph and the axle load of 20 metric tons .... whcih will allow the newer, heavier and mroe powerful loco to run without causing the troubles on the stree rails, concrete sleepers and permanent ways ...

Alas, the fastest train in SE Asia is not anything run by SRT, but the KLIA Ekspres between Kuala Lumpur and its airport. The Siemens Desiro trainset used there can run at up to 160 km/h, and for the actual run of 57 km in 28 min, the average speed is 122.14 km/h.
Lets' put the link here: World Railway Speeds (http://www.railwaygazette.com/Articles/2005/11/01/1222/2005+World+Speed+Survey+tables.html).

Yay! The reason I loved 2bangkok was cuz of its excellent coverage of the train extensions.
I'll take rail news anyday over politics.
New Shinkansen N700 may break record speed run. It doesn't specify that in the article.

TGV Lyon-St Exupéry to Aix-en-Provence at 263.3 km/h (163.6 mph) is the fastest scheduled run worldwide. Nozomi Shinkansen at 261.8 km/h (162.7 km/h) from Hiroshima to Kokura is the 2nd fastest run currently, formerly the fastest 1997-2005. With the new N700 timetable, it may have overtaken the TGV Lyon-St Exupéry, I don't know if 5 minutes off Osaka-Hakata is enough to set a record. Id be cool if someone could find out...
