New Registering your car - May 27, 2006
In case you do not know: Those registering cars do not have to have their vehicles inspected on-site at the motor vehicle department. For 106 baht you can get a certificate of inspection from one of the special shops that ring motor vehicle department. All these shops display the logo (above) that designate a "privately run business for checking a car's condition."
GoogleEarth placemarks for checking centers around Morchit are here and here.http://www.2bangkok.com/2bangkok/googleearth/Check%20Center%201.kmz

I guess you might call these centers a well-kept secret, but I first noticed them being built in this provincial city about 2000. Since then I have used four such centers in two provinces. One was in a small town. There must be a few dozen in this city.

The equipment they use seems to be more up to date than that previously used by the MV Dept. I have found these centers really helpful, as they do all the paperwork for you and don't expect you to hang around waiting for it. They will also advise you on such stuff as taking the soft fittings out of the back of your pickup before the test to avoid paying for the 'saloon car ' tax rating. This system is very similar to the MOT Garage system used in England, although these centers seem to be independent of service centers at present.
