Vertigo is one of my favorite places in Bangkok, and it has made a deep impression on every visitor I've brought there so far (4 and counting!). However, the drinks are expensive and the service isn't very good by Thai standards... how does Sirocco compare? Is it also possible to go there for a drink only?

Do you have too much money, or what? :-) Or did your unfortunate guests have to pay for the experience? :D Just kidding.

Yes, definitely! Try it!

I find the futuristic bar "on the edge" (and the stairs leading down from the lift exit to the restaurant area) at Sirocco to be even more impressive than the setting at Vertigo.

Though I didn't even have a drink at State Tower because it started to rain (bad for an outdoor place...), but the atmosphere until then was enjoyable nonetheless. Have to come back.

And I think Vertigo is generally (food and drinks) more expensive, isn't it? (Which has to do with the 5 star hotel downstairs.) Our dinner there actually was.... em.... way above my budget. That is not to say that Sirocco is significantly cheaper, either.... but you get what you pay for (especially the wondeful views, in this case).

Sirocco is definitely more spectacular becuase of the grand entrance (exiting the dome and then going down a large bank of stairs to another level)... I think drinks are 250 (compared with Vertigo's 200).

I've never eaten at Vertigo, I always just go for a single drink as a nightcap. It's a bit unfortunate that both Vertigo and Sirocco feature international food, not Thai cuisine... Banyan Tree's Saffron right below Vertigo is quite good, but it's also very expensive and doesn't have an outdoor section.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, looks like Sirocco will definitely be on the to-do list next time! And as for being wealthy, 250 baht for a drink is a lot in Thailand, but S$10 for a drink is normal in Singapore's nightspots...

I haven't been up Sirocco restaurant yet. I quite like Virtigo / Moon Bar on top of Thai Wah 2, eventhough I've only been there once. Sirocco would have been even more spectacular with the illuminated dome... and the view of the Chao Phraya river(!!)

BTW that revolving restaurant in the glass dome is opening soon right?

Don't know if it is open yet, but it will not be revolving.

I have been to both many times, though I've not actually eaten at Sirocco.

Heineken bottles were 180 baht at Sirocco last trime I was there at the bar. Prices in Sirocco seem like they are maybe 10% cheaper. The two are definitely competing head to head and have similar kinds of food on offer.

Expect to pay around 3000-4000 per head at either for a full meal with wine -- not cheap! However just going for drinks is a bargain.

The food is good at both places, but they tend to heavy meaty farang cusine. So if you're planning to impress a Thai girl, you may find that if she's not used to eating western food, the view may impress but the menu doesn't!

As others have commented, Sirocco has the more amazing views with its river location, impressive stairway entrance, corner bars jutting into the sky and being a few floors higher. But both are spectacular.

State Tower and Sirocco is in an odd location. The area surrounding it is fairly run down and lacking amenities and the building itself is almost vacant. This makes for an interesting contrast if you lead a visitor on foot through the crowded market to the suddenly spectacular views over the city.

Sadly I have now been taken to Sirocco.

I say 'sadly' because although the view is great - the service was lousy, the food poor and the wine was merely passable.

Next time a friend wants to spend 8k on me I will suggest eight meals at Somboon!

Yup, Sirocco has now displaced Vertigo as my standard place to take visitors on their first night in the Big Mango -- I love watching jaws drop. :D The views are stupendous and being there at night with no walls, no nothing separating you from the sea of light is amazing... but do check to see if anybody in your group suffers from vertigo, as they're guaranteed to get it here if they do.

So. Unlike the relatively compact Vertigo, Sirocco is huge and usually has a live jazz band playing. Sirocco itself is a big, popular and very very expensive (2000++/head) restaurant, but I usually head straight for the Moon Bar, which isn't exactly cheap either (most all drinks 200+) but at least limits the damage somewhat. Note that there's no cover charge as such, so if you're really cheap there's nothing stopping you from just blending into the crowd without buying a drink.

There's also a couple of other expensive restaurants in the rooftop complex, but they're mostly indoors -- although at least one of the bars has outdoor balconies with seating though. I've heard good things about Mezzaluna's Italian food too, but it's also very expensive.

I am probably the only person in Bangkok not to like Sirocco.

I have been there three times (as a guest) and on each ocassion the service has been poor, and for the money the menu range and food quality is not inspiring.

It is as if they are playing on the view being worth the money - I actually go to eat, and that is not worth the money.
