A reader comments on the mention of metered taxis in 1966 (http://www.2bangkok.com/2bangkok/1966/1966BangkokBulletin.shtml#meter):
"Saw your article about taxis in 1966. When I first arrived in BKK in 1980 I recall the ocassional taxi with a meter installed. It was obvious by their state that they had not worked for a long time. Two possibilities occur to me:
1. That there were remnants from an earlier metered taxi experiment, or;
2. These were used taxis imported with meter equipment intact.
I tend to think number 1 is more likely. When they first instituted meters again in the early 90s (?) I never thought it would work--boy was I wrong. Then again, I never thought I would see many Thais liking pizza either."
