View Full Version : Smart Cards & SVTs
The front page today says contactless Smart Card readers will be installed in Asok and Saladaeng BTS stations.
So suppose I use the smart card to enter from Asok but want to get off in Phrom Phong?
Good question, but since these are the connecting stations with the subway, it must mean they are readying their facilities to be compatible with the subway cards...

You don't! Kuala Lumpur actually has this problem: only a select few stations on the Star LRT let you use the Touch'n'Go card. The Putra LRT, on the other hand, has card readers in every station, and evidently the current plan is to make T'n'G standard for all forms of public transportation in KL.

Thats ridiculous.
But I guess the implementation of a single card system for all transportation in Bangkok has to start somewhere.

For Smart card system installation, they have to settle on the revenue sharing as well as the ticket rates first before embarkign the plan to install smaart card system in all stations.
Furthermore, the handicapped told the governemtn that they have to set a mandate on BTSC, MRTA and BMTA to set up the facilities to the handicapped as well as norla people who have a problems to access subway-skytrain and bus.

2) the deaf
3) the retard
4) the handicapped wiht wheelchairs or not
5) the senior people, the pregent, the children and the foreigners who can speak neither Thai nor English.

Just been 'robbed' by the Skytrain.
Apparently my Stored Value Ticket has expired but they will not refund the 229 Baht stored in my ticket!
Rang BTS office and they say that I would have been told in June 2002 that it would expire today!!
Anyone know how to get the money transferred to another ticklet?

How does the expiry work -- is it two years since last charging, or two years since last use? Adding more value to the card "resets" the counter, right?
But I'm afraid you're out of luck, since I'm sure the expiry is in the small print somewhere and it's your responsibility to refund before it runs out. The same happened to me at Big C's food court, which also uses stored value cards -- although they expire in two months, not years! My losses were limited to around 15 baht so I won't complain too loudly though...

you can also contact BTS Hotline # 0 2617 7141-2 or nuduan@bts.co.th on the regard na ka.
Actually the ticket condition says "The remaining value and the deposit of Stored Value Ticket that are more than 24 months old from the date of issue or last revaluation, as the case may be, cannot be refunded or replaced with the new ticket or transferred to other ticket or exchanged to other value."

Thanks but I e-mailed nuduan on 27.06.04 but never had the courtesy of a reply.
I do not doubt that it is in the rules (which one seldom sees or reads) but I also question they add 200 Baht to my ticket three months gao without warning me it was due to expire?

Mr The Enforcer
You said you added 200 baht to your ticket 3 months ago then your ticket should not be expired na.

Now you get my point!
The key question is - is it two years from when I purchased it, or from when it was updated?

Well it has been a week since BTS asked for the ticket back but no response!
However, interesting to note that since this incident (in Mid-June) I have reverted to using Taxis instead of BTS and wow! I am actually getting to destinations no slower and in comfort (no stairs, no open-air waiting, no crowded trains!).
As they say the BTS loss is the Taxi-drivers gain!

Sawadee, Bangkok,
What is the top-up rate of a SkyTrain stored value ticket ? I have one stored value ticket of SkyTrain but I am not sure how much it will cost to top it up in Bangkok this time.
How many rides can there be with one SkyTrain stored value ticket ?
You can top up as much value in Thai Baht as you want.
The number of rides you can get out of it would then depend on the distance traveled, as with this kind of card, no rides are deducted, but the actual price that you have to pay to reach your destination.
Hi, Bangkok (NCR),
Are you sure there is no limit in topping up a SkyTrain stored value ticket ? I remember when i used the SkyTrain stored value ticket from the fifth day till the seventh day in May, I was puzzled why the Baht shown on the barrister continued to increase beyond 200 Baht without me topping it up. I bought it at minimum 200 Baht.
Does it mean when the SkyTrain stored value ticket can be used for two years, it need not top up at all ? If yes, what a fantastic stored value ticket product SkyTrain has !
In Singapore, MRT stipulates once its stored value ticket (in the past) fell to S$0.00, it need to be topped up. Today, MRT uses ezlink-card which is similar to stored value tickets used in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
there are several types of stored value cards for the skytrain.
the first one is called the skycard, which is a typical stored value ticket. You put a certain amount of money in the card and the cost of each trip you take is dedicted from the card.
the second one is the passes they have on sale. These come in denominations of 10 trips, 15 trips or 30 trips and are valid for a certain time period only. With these cards, each trip costs between 12 to 18 baht (depending on what type of card you buy), regardless of how far you travel.
the last type is the tourist cards they have that are valid for 1 day or 3 days. These offer you unlimited rides on the skytrain.
Sawadee, Bangkok (NCR, Hitesh),
I am referring to the 200 Baht Skycard of SkyTrain, a special stored value ticket of SkyTrain which can be used up to 2 years. What is the top-up rate for this SkyTrain special stored value ticket ?
In Singapore, you can top up each adult ezlink-card at denominations of S$10, S$20 and S$50 once the value of the ezlink-card falls to S$0.00 and below. Each ezlink-card can last for at least 2 years if you do not damage it. The ezlink-card can be used for riding public buses, MRT and pay for your fast food at McDonald's restaurants in Singapore.
How about Bangkok's Subway stored-value tickets and SkyTrain Skycard ? What are their top-up rates ? SkyTrain and Subway should indicate the subsequent top-up rates so that commuters can decide their limit on spending on such rides.
I like the Skycard's value very much.

What is the top-up rate for this SkyTrain special stored value ticket ? As elaborated above, there are no preset amounts like in S'pore. If you like to top up, say, 273 Baht, I am pretty sure the friendly staff will comply with your wish. They are able to save any figure to the card's magnetic strip (or however that works). It's as simple as that, really. Don't know if BTS has set an abolute limit, though. I think I heard something about 1000 Baht.
Thank you for the replies, Bangkok (NCR, Hitesh).

The maximum Top Up for Skycard is 1000 Baht but many Bangkopkian would refill theuir skycard at 100-300 Baht.
It is ASBSOLUTELY hard to find any Bangkokians who are going
to refill tthe SKycard at 500 Baht, let alone 1000 Baht
maximum since they can pay 540 Baht for 30-day pass whcih
are a lot better deal than Skycard.

Here (http://app.lta.gov.sg/corp_press_content.asp?start=1419)'s a little something that slipped under the radar:
MSI Global Pte Ltd in consortium with Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) has won a contract worth S$7.62 million from Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC) ...
The consortium will design, supply, deliver and commission an upgraded AFC to incorporate a state-of-the-art contact-less smart card operation while retaining the existing single trip magnetic card. The first stage of the project will be completed in October 2006. When fully upgraded in February 2007, the smart card AFC will cater for a host of travel options, including a series of fare promotion schemes while providing features for future inter-modal travelling options and non-transit applications.
This has been trundling along for a while now, I too am surprised that nothing has been noted in the media. Even the appearance of new Ticket Vending Machines (not part of this upgrade) went without comment.
The losing bidder (Cubic) had a more elegant solution. They provided the existing AFC system and the upgrade would have been more closely integrated, lost out on price though.
The system specifications allow for interoperability with the metro smartcard system (by Thales) although there are no agreements in place and the project has no provision for a Central Clearing House (CCH) which would be required to allow a single ticket to be used on both systems.

Sorry, can you explain what you mean? How can the systems be interoperable if you can't use tickets on both?
Sorry if I wasn't clear.
The specs for the media (smartcards) and the data format theron require that the BTS cards can be read / written by MRT's AFC system (and vice versa). This is a fundamental requirement for single ticket operation.
BUT
As yet the card's won't work because there is no agreement between BTS and MRT to allow. There also needs to be a CCH system in place to correctly allocate sales and usage revenue.
