Anything! Even a hand trolley! I'm being practical here, because no steam loco will operate this far south of the Thonburi Depot; which I suppose is the only one still able to deal with steam. And I doubt any excursion would be allowed on the Sungei Golok Line south of 'Yai with the current security concerns.

One of the most interesting things I've ever done was ride a brakevan on a freight from Padang to Hat-Yai. The train had many passengers on various bogies, complete with their smuggled goods. The driver even halted for them to drop off at the railway flyover just south of the junction.

Incidentally. Do the Thonburi steamers actually have oil-fired burners in the firebox, like most of the restored steam trains in Europe? Oil tank built into the tender? What grade of fuel?

What grade of fuel?

I once was told just old oil and leftovers from maintaining diesel engines.
This in order to save money.

I guess that explains the ruck of really black smoke that the locos are sending out of the stack in some photos from Railfan Trips.

this is an interesting issue to find out. Someone like Khun Wisarut should know.

On other relating issue. I couldn't find any trade or professional organization devoted to rail transit either. It's about time to start one. Now that Thailand is embarking to be a major player in rail transit systems, with more than 100 km of rail transit system in Bangkok within the next 10 years!!!

1) Now, Thai Railfans has reported that the wall of Makkasan maintainance enter has been demolished to make the way for Sucvannabhum Airport Link. Those Slum Dwellers alogn Eatern Railway are now goign to wreck havoc on the Construction of Suvannabhum Airport Link ... YOU should sped this weekend to snap a photo of Makkasan after the wall demolision ...... before they have set the barriers .... tyo prevent thieves ...

2) The Author of "Railways of Thailand" is goign to SUE SRT for copyright violation despite of the fact that Mr. Ramear got most of the raw materials for his book from SRT, especially from the Photographic section of PR Dept, SRT as well as the Mechanical section fo Bangsue and Makkasan

... This incident has UPSETTED many SRT Railways workers, esp the older one who used to drive steam locomotives .... and SRT has decided to TERMINATE the contact with the Author of "Railways of Thailand" for GOOD.

3) Southern Express No. 38 was hitting a school pickup from Thammawitthaya Islamic Highschool of Yala at 3:25 PM, a few minutes after going out fo Yala Station... 9 students dead whiel the other 8 in ICUs .... [Sept 12, 2005]

4) Prachachat Thurakij (Sept 11-14, 2005) has reported the continuing Hopewell Saga .... causign the delay on mass transit projject and make the proposed pan for Mionorail form Bang Kapi to Klong Tan hitting antoerh delay even thoyugh most peopkle livign along Ram Khamaeng road prefer MRT ... but MOTC and OTP are REFUSING to listen to the people ... Ai Phen and Ai Khamroblux won't LISTEN to Premier Tahksin's request to KEEP the election promises with the people .... a sure sign that Premier Thaksin is losing power to his own inner circle ....

4) After Finishing Kaeng Khoi - Klong 19 - Chachongsao - Laem Chabang Double tracking project, SRT is going to double tracks on the folowiogn Isan routes:

1) Muang Pone - Ban Phai (30 km)
2) Map Krabao - Pakchong (47 km) -> the most troubeklsome sections of all Thai railway ->
100-200 meter radius curve with 24 mill gradient ...
3) Pakchong - Nakhon Ratchasima

[Ref: Transportation Journal - Sept 4-10, 2005]

Well, the double tracking for Northern Line has been limited to Lopburi to
Pak Nam pho at th time being to facilitate the rice merchants in
Nakhon Sawan so they can sent the rice in 40-feet container boxes to
Laem Chabang. :D

However, the fuel Hike should prompt the governmetn to exten the double tracking project to Phisanuloke to facilitate the oil trains between Bueng Phra [the oil Depot in the Northern region] to LaemChabang (the clostest station to Thai Oil refinery at Sri racha)

The Double tracking from Chumporn to Surat Thani is to facilitate the daily container trips between Bangsue and Padang Besar ... but the doubel tracking allthge way from nakhon pathom to Surat Thani woulddo much better jobs to relive the traffic jam in the section from Nakhon pathom to HuaHin which are under the rail/sleeper replacement ... without recompacting the ballast .... causign the speed limit to 30 KPH (!) .... The recompacting process would take longer time to execute due to the fact that ballast has to be thickened, washed, cleansed before being recompacted .... to meet
20 ton axle load and 120 kph speed limit. This also compell SRTto double
the fleet of ballast recompacting/washing/cleasing trains ....

You would be amazed how deep some articles delve into material and details. Especially when written by experts. This forum is a great source and has lots and lots of interesting details on many topics related to Thailand. I love reading it every day that I have the time. The thing that saddens me is that a lot of the info would be certainly of interest to a wider audience but this board, but after some time ot just disappears as being one of the htreads of the past :(

Anyway Kh Wisarut keep posting. I am a fan of your posts :)

The biggest railroad fanclub in Thailand is probably the http://www.rotfaithai.com online community. However it seems to be Thai-only, and as I cannot read Thai I have no idea if it has any offline activities additional to that forum/website.

Nowaday, the Information restriction is EVER more severe than the last ... They would NOT allow UNAUTHORIZED persons to obtain ANY single copy of "Por Dor Ror" [Railway Runnign Announcement - the list of stations alogn with the schedule for each line]. :(

This restriction also apply to thsoe who join Rotfaithai.com because some of those kids [NOT the staff] have Got the copies of "Por Dor Ror" ven though they are UNAUTHORIZED to do so ... They have NO clue at all that today's security measurements have become even more restrict due to the lack of disciopline... they are just the bunch of SPOILED kids who want to get such info so they canrun to take a photo ....

All the copies of "Por Dor Ror" in the Unauthorized hands MUST be returned so they can INCINERATE those copies to prevent any more cases of mishandling bythe unauthorized people.

This probabbly due to the fact that the police have ARRESTED the member of PULO who come to look aroudn BKK to fidn the place to DETONATE the bombs ... such as Ministry of Defence, Army Barracks in BKK, Theme Parks, Deparment Stores, Skytrain adn Subway stations etc.

After quite a time of thinking I came to the conclusion we still on are own as we were 20 years ago. O.K. by that time no websites what so ever and later the start of what is now known as the Hall of railway fame in the Chatuchak Park in Bangkok. They call it museum but with all respect for the owner and his effort, a museum in my opinion is something else. For the time being it fits, on long term the Thai Railway heritage deserves a better place and this goes beyond the interest of a single rail fan only. Even a group of them unless extremely wealthy and willing to spent can do the job. :D
See for example what happened at the science museum near the Ekkamai bus station.
On the other hand one can consider Thailand as a living museum with a lot of plinthed locomotives scattered throughout the country. Crab a train and hob from plinth to plinth. With a bit of luck you encounter another fan; the edge of the platform seems to be an excellent meeting place. A real society is something really missed.

Railfanning (particularly with regard to steam locomotive) is as old as the railways themselves. In Britain where I come from, fans were photographing their favourites 100 years ago and the first efforts at private preservation date back 80 years. It is something which encompasses all ages and crosses the class divide. One of our most famous railway photographers was a bishop in the Church of England. In Europe I have heard it said that the famous composer Antonin Dvorak had the disease and the list of railway connected music is long and growing, see http://www.uclan.ac.uk/library/musrail.htm for example.

When I was young, while our sisters besieged pop stars like the Beatles, we all trooped off to railway bridges and the ends of platforms to watch and record the passage of (almost invariably, steam) trains. Most railfans grew up, many of us never did. Invariably, our interests developed in different directions as our beloved steam locomotives went to the great locomotive shed in the sky. Some transferred their affection to the new diesels, some became modellers, some historians, some became active preservationists and some, like me, developed their interest in steam locomotives round the world.

Railfanning in Asia (outside Japan), by comparison, is a relatively new phenomenon. Traditional railwaymen everywhere have always enjoyed their work and often developed a keen interest outside their areas of specialism, but members of the general public rarely so. I met my first Indonesian railfan in 1993 and it came as a shock to him to discover that there were others out there too. Increasing affluence and the spread of the internet has certainly led to a mushrooming in numbers all over Asia.

I confess I have yet to meet any Thai railfans but what I have seen on the web and on the ground, I think that the community is badly in need of some of guidance in how best to develop their collective hobby.

When I first visited Thailand 30 years ago, RSR (as it then was) was just about the best railway in the region. The steam locomotives gleamed in the sun and the trains were operated with a pride which was evident to even the most casual observer. The railway management ensured that anything that was 'preserved' was as well looked after as possible. Today's SRT is a pale shadow of its former self, I could go on endlessly but I will simply observe that if Pacfics 824 and 850 had been turned out for regular passenger duty by Haadyai Shed in 1973 in the way they were for the recent King's Birthday train to Ayuthaya, the drivers would have faced immediate disciplinary action.

Preserved locomotives all over the country are neglected, none more so than those at Ekkamai. Instead of wringing their hands, why are local enthusiasts not rallying around to rescue the prime exhibits? It is no crime to get your hands dirty caring for such things or trying to raise the modest amount of money needed to secure their future.

I am also extremely disappointed in rotthaifai.com's attitude to other people's copyright. Recently I discovered that a large number of photographs of Thai steam locomotives from a CD-ROM I produced in collaboration with other railfans had appeared on the site without either attribution or any attempt to seek permission. When someone on a similar Malaysian forum questioned their appearance on rotfaithai.com he was told "Naah, it is from SRT sources though ..... but Khun Bob (collection of Tiger Steam) have also collect some Thai steam loco photo from SRT source as well as the one he got from the railfans who went to Thailand durign the 1960's - 1970's" - a statement which would not excuse the piracy even if were not also blatantly untrue. Complaints to the webmaster have gone unanswered although it seems the pictures have been taken down.

Grow up Thai railfans, it is your heritage and your job to protect it and act responsibly in pursuit of your hobby.

I AGREE FULLY

I came to Bangkok for work in May 2005 and hoped to find some kind of rail fan activities such as special day trips on steam trains or heritage diesels or even on former Bangkok trams on a special track in a park at least. But NOOO

I find nothing of this kind except for a special train that I found out about on the day it ran 5th December so it was too late.

There is no rail magazine of Thai or overseas origin in English let alone Thai!

They don’t widely advertise rail fan trips in the English media or online

There rail fan website is impossible to use as they don’t have duel language options for the forums and website or the news part. It should have English and Thai with the same content on all Thai rail fan sites and train company sites. If not it will continue to be a Thai only activity with no non Thai speaking involvement which limits non Thai preservation activities and tours

I hope some day the Thai will learn that for there hobby to grow it needs some outside influence from visitors and expats as well.

Does anyone know who to contact on rotfai.com (Thai rail fan site) that I could email and discuss some issues with them to help them improve there hobby in Bangkok and around Thailand.

With a view of making improvements to there offline preservation efforts and tours such as a rail museum or tram and rail museum with working trams in one of the parks for people to ride on for a fee.

My wife and I spent almost 4 years in Thailand between 1995 and 1999 and I very much enjoyed the freedom to roam around the railroad yards taking photographs and video without being harassed by police as you would be here in the USA. I found it strange that very few Thai RR fans were in evidence even when the steam locomotives were in operation and I rode on many excursions. The only fan I did meet was an engineer for SRT.

The one thing that was a handicap to me was the language barrier. While I had a friendship with a couple of SRT railroad men who could speak a little English it was still difficult to acquire all the information I desired regarding the operation of the railroad. Had I committed to learn the Thai language I would have enjoyed my time in Thailand that much more, but I was just not motivated to do so.

I wish that the Thai Fan site had English also, but it is Thailand and they have no reason to provide us farang's with English translation. We are the ones who are too lazy to learn their language so we can enjoy their Rot Fai even more. A Thai who cannot read English is not going to have much fun on a rail fan site in the USA.

Why not set up a separate fan site in English. That is not something I know how to do but maybe someone who visits this forum does. Nothing wrong with having a separate site with photographs and related information. No doubt some of the Thai's who can work with English would participate. If they were invited they would come!

While I appreciate the Webmaster of Rot Fai providing an English based section the requirements to register are unreasonable. The idea that a passport number, home address and telephone number will result in action to keep out spammers and control copyright violators is just not realistic.

Assigning a password alone will eliminate 99.99% spamming. If someone with a password spams then they can be restricted. Copyright violations are not known until someone complains and then that person can be restricted. There is nothing to prevent anyone from posting someone else's photograph by providing all this personal information. I have over 1,000 photographs to select from that I took in the almost four years I spent in Thailand and would be willing to share. I am also aware and accept the fact that when you share photographs on the WWW you run the risk of the photographs being used elsewhere.

While I could just provide phoney details about myself on the registration form that is not they way I do things so I will just not register.

March 1, 2006 due to the fololwing reasons

1) Some members have plagiaraized the Website
2) Some have accused the webmaster for cheating and they have written very INSULTIGN words ... deserving to get Libel suit in Criminal Court.
3) Some younger members have created lots of troubles with railwayworkers and even members of
