Update on Thonburi Station
- August 17, 2004
Nils reports: Yesterday we visited Thonburi Station again to check
whether there has been any progress related to the construction of
the Siriraj Hospital buildings...
I was rather baffled to find that nothing has happened since they
cut down the platform roof supports... and dismantled the rails in
November-December 2003... All they have done is to remove the materials,
as well as the renovation model
in the passenger hall. The rest is still the same, naked concrete
platforms that serve no purpose anymore, overgrown track alignments,
the green metal barrier (sign: "SRT gave this area of land to
Sirirat Hospital")... The songthaew services still terminate
at Thonburi Station. Even the railway police station is still there
and operating...
The big (Thai-language) sign placed at the station entrance reads:
"On this piece of land, a medical institute of the highest standard
in Southeast Asia is currently being built by cooperation between
the State Railway of Thailand, the Ministry of Transportation and
Sirirat Hospital for the well-being of the whole people."
